Lunenberg & Mahone Bay

So we’ve moved on to visit Lunenberg which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, more shortly! En-route we find a Decathlon so Emma can get a pump for her SUP (which I accidentally forgot to pack) and a beginners kit fishing rod for Alex a she's been desperate to try fishing after watching too many YouTube fishing videos (current autistic obsession).

We pass through a delightful seaside village called Mahone Bay and arrive at our night stop, the Lightship Brewery across the harbour from Lunenberg.

We need food and drink but on this Saturday they’ve already run out of food - not a problem for us grown ups but an issue for Alex who needs food. So a short walk around the harbour, along the empty waterfront and we find a lovely restaurant, The Grand Banker (a reference to the fishing area known as the Grand Banks, and not a derogatory reference about people working in finance in the city!). Their slogan is brilliant and reminiscent of home - a fishing village with a drinking problem - the same as one of our fave pubs the London Inn in Shaldon!

After Lobster Roll, scallops and fish and chips, washed down with lovely local beer, a short stroll back to the brewery - which had closed already by 9pm. So we had a couple of local canned beers watching the tide come into the harbour chasing little birds up the foreshore.

Sunday. Very little open especially as it’s a little early in the season. But, cycling into Lunenberg we discover an excellent local distillery amongst the amazing Colonial buildings. The town is laid out to a standard British colonial design which hasn't changed since the 1700s hence the unesco status, the houses are beautiful and colourful and the rum worth buying!

A longer 12km cycle sees us visiting Mahone Bay with quaint arty shops and the opportunity to purchase Emma’s birthday pressie. Then another 12km return cycle (luckily they are e-bikes) ready for Alex’s boat fishing trip. The water is a bit choppy, enough for me to say no, so Emma and Alex have a good hour fishing in the inner harbour area with the lovely Chris Emma doing the learning, Alex steering the boat. Fish caught - zero. But Emma did learn how to fish...a little bit.

Back to Wendy for food and as for a beer at the brewery - closed on Sundays until mid-May!
